Web design important for SEO

Does web design affect SEO rankings?

The SEO industry is very competitive field  where only strongest and smartest win. If you have some experience in Search Engine Optimization process, you probably know that the difference between optimizing a web site and making money from it in 2009 and today is much more different as search Engines (G) became smarter than before. If you caught that time, you probably migrated to (also) smarter level in your SEO strategy. For a beginner, this means that design has VERY important role for being an average Internet Marketer.

Big brands have professional web design, and recent Google updates make big web sites rank higher than small affiliate sites, mostly because of diverse link profile, domain, and page authority, and other metrics. That means if you strive for small and strongly targeted websites, you need to grow the level of your website design and get the most of every visitor lands on your page. You need to shift your strategy as there are no more fast rankings (and stable besides), money-making buttons, PR links from non relevant sites and so on. Making people like your website as soon as they land on it is very important these days for survival of any online business.

And what to say about mobile users? Having responsive design means big advantage in front of your competitors because people are going mobile. No matter if you already have a website or want to build a new one, responsive web design should always be your first choice before everything else.

Responsive web design is important for SEO

So we know that web design plays an important role in SEO but how to get the most of it? It all depends whether someone has any knowledge of HTML and CSS. These are the basic elements you need to learn sooner or later if not already.

Website design highly affects user behaviour on the website. If you present a great combination of colours, elements, navigation, typography, and graphics, than you are in a big advantage than half of your competitors. If users like the way you present the story on your website or blog, they will likely stay more on it and won’t simply bounce back which in terms, act negatively in the eyes of Google. I do believe that low bounce rate is an important positive signal for Google and vice versa.

Also, good web design may help you get better conversions (although content is most important), and you can make A/B testing to realize which test looks better in the eyes of your visitors, or customers, and which converts better.

A good knowledge in web design is also important in terms of website speed. In addition, you know that site speed is one of the most important SEO factors in 2013 and beyond. This means that websites which won’t load in a matter of 3 seconds risk to be penalized by Google, mainly Google Panda update which carry for high-quality web pages. Having a website that loads slowly means bad experience for users according Google, and slowly websites are undervalued.

Playing with design these days is quite easy. There are tons of tools for this purpose, but there is also a support or feature on almost all major browsers called Inspect Element. Right click on a web page, choose Inspect Element and there you are. You are now free to code live in your browser without changing current design. At least, no until you save the changes.

Inspect element feature provide a great opportunity for testing colour combinations, set typography and its characteristic, set padding and margin, and make changes on CSS properties or adding new ones.

So invest time in learning CSS with Inspect Element as we said that design plays an important role in web pages rank.  Always choose responsive themes, and make A/B test regularly.
