Can not change google plus name

Google+ finally offers to create custom link on pages

Google Plus surprised SEO community. The team behind this social network finally improved the URL format of +Pages, which is good for SEO and branding. Previously, Google+ links to profiles and pages were in this format https://plus.google.com/106534900569189563346. Exceptions to this rule were only large businesses or celebrities.

Now, say goodbye to those long and confusing links and say welcome to the new and more friendly Google+ Page URL format – google.com / + name.

Google first offered this option in August 2012 on consumers and brands with verified accounts, but then quickly stopped. Now the situation has finally changed.

Google+ URL’s with numbers are now past for +pages

The bad news is that you can choose from pre-approved links proposed by Google, and you can not create your own custom URL. For example, the proposed URL for Dazines.co.uk Google+ page is google.com/+dazinescouk. This is because (I suppose) the brand name composed of 7 letters, which is short in fact. Google automatically added “couk” to the brand name.

What you can change is the the capitalization or accents/diacritics of your custom URL. For example, change Dazinescouk into DazinesCoUk.

How to get Google+ name?

You can compose your own request link, if your Google+ Page meets the following conditions:

  1. There is a profile picture
  2. There are at least 10 followers
  3. The account is at least 30 days old

You need to have Google+ Page and website connected at first i.e. need to have a website verified, and if meet above criteria, just visit the  page and start the process.

Google plus name preapproval

If you still do not see the option, do not worry, in a week should be available to all and you will see a notification when the link will be ready. Be patient and check the About page of your account in the next few days.

However, I don’t have information on custom URL’s for Google+ profiles. Will a custom URL for Google+ profile be the next big thing by Google? Yet to see.
